Description/Objectives

The objective of this class is to introduce the participant to the marketing practices of the sports organizations.  The intent is to review the terminology, systems, techniques, and processes that are used in this specialized application of marketing and to encourage students to consider how traditional marketing strategies may be applied to this substantial and growing industry.
The class is conducted in seminar format.  This means class discussions are highly interactive and class participation is anticipated and expected.  Time will be specifically devoted to the discussion of the topics listed on the scheduled, however, they will not necessarily be limited to these issues.  Guest speakers will also be invited to add diversity to class discussions.

Assignments

There are six (6) assignments due as indicated on the attached class schedule.  No late assignments will be accepted (they are due at class time on the day indicated).  Each assignment requires a critique of an article you find that addresses one of the six topics identified below & on the class schedule.  Each critique is not to be longer than two (2) pages (single-spaced, 1-inch margins) and will be graded on the basis of content (50%) and presentation (50%) (Presentation = grammar, spelling, & punctuation).  You must turn in two (2) copies of each assignment (one will be retained to prevent re-circulation). The four (4) highest assignment scores will be used to calculate the assignment grade. The SportsBusiness Journal & Team Marketing Reports are excellent sources for these assignments.

Primary Research

Each class member will take part in a research project related to the class.  This may involve in-class tasks and/or a limited amount of out-of-class data collection.

Grading/Evaluation
         Tests                                 75 pts.
            Assignments                      20 pts
            Primary Research Project    5 pts.

Grades (+/-) will be determined using the traditional FSU scale.  Any adjustments (curves) will not be made until after all grades are compiled and, if appropriate, the overall mean grades and standard deviations will be used in such calculations.  In class unannounced attendance quizzes will be given and treated as bonus points.  That is, all students present and taking a quiz will receive a one percentage point bonus on his/her next exam.  No quiz make-ups are given for any reason; it is simply my way to reward attendance.

Hints for Success

Attendance and participation are highly recommended.
Type all assignments in 12-point Times New Roman font.
Purchase and read the text, the Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal, and the Team Marketing Report.
